What Is Circumcision?

A circumcision is the removal of the foreskin from the penis. This procedure is performed under an anaesthetic. The surgeon will remove the skin and stitch the cut portions together.

Why do I need a circumcision?

Indications for Circumcision are:

1)Unretractable foreskin (phimosis)

2)Chronic or persistent infection (balanitis)

3)Difficulty in passing urine.

4)Religious reasons

5) Personal reasons

Problems you may have experienced in the past can be Penile discharge, discomfort passing urine, pain during intercourse.

Prior to your operation

You need to be fasted for at least 6 hours before the General/ Spinal anaesthetic. Therefore you must not eat or drink anything 6 hours before the procedure. A pubic shave may be necessary.

What happens after your operation?

You will be nursed in bed on the day of your operation

To alleviate any pain, discomfort or nausea, you will be given regular medication.

You will have a loose dressing around your penis; this dressing will be soaked off in the bath.

What you should remember at home?

You should have a daily bath.

Avoid wearing tight clothing.

Avoid intercourse until the wound is well healed.

Take things easy, you may need to take a week off work.

If you are worried or have problems after you discharge get in touch with your doctor.

Following Your Circumcision

Following this operation you may feel tender and sore. It is necessary to keep your wound clean and free from infection, so a bath should be taken once or twice daily for at least 5 days. Soft yellow paraffin or cream should be applied as often as necessary until the area begins to heal. Sometimes stitches are in place, these will dissolve and should therefore, cause you no problem. Please ask the surgeon regarding stitches, as practises vary from hospital to hospital.
